I might (if I'm not throwing up with nerves) enter my ex Point to Point TB in a wee local show this weekend and don't have a clue what I'm doing! My friend is doing an in-hand ex Racehorse class with him and if I haven't died with fright I might, maybe, enter him for a ridden exRacer class and then a a Ridden Hunter or Riding Horse class. What would we have to do for these classes....is it just walk, trot, canter on both reins and then a short individual show? Also I have bought a brown/green ish tweed jacket cause I was told my black jacket was a major no no. I have bought a cream stock to wear over my white show shirt, cream breeches, brown gloves and long black boots and hat. Is that fairly correct turnout for any of the above classes? Should I be in a proper (cream) shirt with a collar and a tie? Sorry for all the questions but I have only ever entered one class in my life at age of 12 and that was a helluva long time ago I can tell you Many thanks in advance

Aww thanks Lisa. Took our two 4yr old coloured babies to their first ever show last weekend and after 8 hours of prep the day before and being the general dogsbody on the big day for my friends who were doing the actual showing....I think I have the bug.
Just hope the excitment doesn't go to my boy's head cause he has had a well earned break since I got him so we haven't even cantered/jumped yet. Still.....we have to start somewhere.....will remember to breathe, smile and not choke or overdose on my Rescue Remedy fruit pastilles.
Hopefully....pics to follow next week then.....yipeeee

Hi good luck with your show and only do what you feel up to if you relax your horse will relax. The turn out depends on type a black navy jacket and shirt and tie and coloured brow band would be nice on a more riding horse/hack type . On a more hunter type wear a tweed jacket and a shirt and tie and a plain brow band , You would not wear a cream stock with a tweed jacket ,cream stocks are only for evening performances in showing . best of luck you will look great !!

A shirt and tie is always more correct for showing than a stock for showing but if you don't have one then a stock is ok for local level. In racehorse classes you as much as you feel capable of doing. In Hunter and Riding Horse classes then you really should walk, trot and canter with everyone else. In Hunter classes the horses are often asked to gallop down the long side. It depends on what show you are doing and their judging policies as to whether the Judge will ridein the Hunter and Riding Horse classes or not.
Just breath, and go out to enjoy yourself - if you don't expect to do well and go for the day out then you will enjoy yourself more and probably perform better.
Have Fun!

Aww thanks you guys. Advice good. Glad I got a tweed jacket then cause it is probably more suitable for him cause he is not a light hack type of TB....he is the chunkiest, grumpiest hippo type thoroughbred I have ever seen and if he didn't have the Weatherby passport with DNA Parentage tested and all that I would be thinking I'd been sold an Irish Draft or Warmblood.
Advice is all fab....will go and enjoy watching my friend do the in-hand class with him and if he is chilled and not too grumpy and Im having fun then I will go for it in a ridden class.....and if not then we will enter a class next time....thanks girls.

good luck, even if you don't go in the ring on the day have a ride round on him anyway, as you've entered you'll be insured and you've paid you dues so enjoy , there's no shame in not actually going in the class, better you and he have a safe quiet time, when you get on him find a quiet place and push him into trot round and round change he rein lots to keep him occupied only when you feel safe up into canter if it all goes well * brace yourself get helpers to wipe you boots and his mouth and off you go!!* get your helper to stay by the entrance so if you feel it's too much for him they can let you out at local level it's okay to call it quits before it goes pear shaped hee hee and remember we've all been there and you horse is the best you've got 10 mins to show the judge how perfect he is so they're green with envy

Thanks Polly. Sound advice and at least at my age I don't care if others think I'm a wimp by not entering a class ;D, happier to be safe and to feel secure and confident with my boy and build up to it when we are ready. No show today though cause my friend had a family emergency so the prep came to a swift halt last night. Is no big deal, there will be other local shows (maybe nxt weekend) and she was getting so stressed bout trying to get to the hospital and not letting us down for the in-hand classes. Isn't important, no rush. Next time. At least Mr Grumpy Pants (not his official name :)lol, more a reflection of his attitude! ;D) and I are all set to go next time. I now have my outfit all ready and he got his 10inch mane chopped ready for plaiting and now looks very civilised....if still grumpy haha. Thanks Peeps.....as soon as I can figure out how to do pics on my profile thing I will put some up of the fattest TB in history

Have to say your wee man sounds like a right character.Looking forward to seeing some pics of him soon. Yeah he is a bit of a character, very, very "mareish" and there isn't anything wee about him....16.2hh (and about the same in width and depth at the moment ). Was quite aggressive when I got him, probably a bit stressed from previous lifestyle and was usually trying to double barrel or cow kick me, knocked me to the ground once, even bit me on the chin - bruises were lovely by the way , but our laid back let a horse be a horse approach seems to have worked and he can be handled much more easily now. Loads of turnout with his new horse family and very little pressure from me has worked wonders so far, nice long break has done him good ;D He was so hideous on our hack yesterday that I probably wouldn't have ridden him in a class today anyway....he was awful ....pretending that everything was going to kill him and going sideways/upways/forwardways all at the same time....but Im delighted cause have had confidence issues for the last 3 years, following lack of time in the saddle cause of bad knee injuries, and his really stupid grumpy behaviour yesterday irritated me but didn't scare me....soooo a major achievement . Oh I totally love my grumpy boy.......thanks for all the lovely comments and advice.

Lisa In scotnorth classes I don't think this counts,my boy got caught up in a wire fence once and has scars on his back legs and he's done very well in these classes.I think some where in the juding guide lines it says something on this.I think it's on the main Scotnorth website.

Blemishes caused by racing injuries etc are ignored for ScotNorth classes. If there are scars, the judge may well ask how they got there...if racing then its ignored. I hope thishelps and really look forward to hearing about your first show once you manage to get there :-) LisaH xxxxxxx
