Wow – what an amazing day and to everyone who came with their horses all I can say is WOW WOW WOW, you turned them and yourselves out beautifully and were an absolute credit to you and the club.
The entries for the ScotNorth classes were by far the biggest of the day – the judge’s eyes nearly popped out when he saw horses, and horses and more horses filing into the ring.
I watched with a lump in my throat as I just saw this long line of ex racehorses start to fill up the collecting area, and they stood out a mile but for all the right reasons.
Before I go on to the results I hope you will indulge me a “recollection” of the day and a few moments that have to be mentioned.
The ridden class was held up because the show had 5 parachutists due to jump out and land near the ex racehorse ring. Well, the parachutes had red smoke coming out of them, great big flapping noisy flags attached to the ‘’jumpers’’ and they hurtled down at some speed, landing on a hill at the back of the arena, followed by the red smoke. The ex racehorses did not bother at all, some stood looking with great interest but not one ex racehorse had a bad reaction, they were so cool and brilliant. Meanwhile, there were mums grass skiing alongside wee ponies, kids hanging on for grim death as their ponies bolted and I just had to smile and think ‘’and people say ex racehorses are mad’’
The ridden class was huge and we had to split it for the group trot/canter as there was just not enough room. The horses all stood so well, they were fabulous. Then time for the individual shows – if the parachutes were not enough to put them to the test, suddenly a hug black plume of smoke came over the arena followed by the noise of motorbikes.
In the main ring there was a bike display with so much noise and smoke it was unreal. Some of the horses got a bit tense but, again, not a one exploded, they all just stood watching.
If the parachutes and smoke and bikes were not enough, right behind the show ring, halfway through the ridden class, the back of a horsebox dropped and out streamed the Hounds from the local hunt. They were making so much noise and went streaming up the hill behind the horses. Now, most of the ex racehorses from that area know hounds and I really thought "this is it, this is going to set them off’’ – but no. It was an amazing sight, 23 ex racehorses all stood, ears pricked and to attention, watching the hounds, ready for the huntsman’s horn. But again, they all behaved impeccably.
I take my hat off to all the riders, they kept their horses lovely and calm, rode them beautifully and I heard so many people around the arena saying how surprised they were that the horses behaved so well. ;D ;D
I was so proud of them all, and I wish we could have given rosettes right down to 23rd place.
The judge said he had a really hard time, all the horses were lovely and he had a great time in the ring.
The organisers were delighted with the number of entries, the standard of turnout on the day and the organisation behind the scenes from ScotNorth. They were very grateful to everyone for making such huge classes run so smoothly and provide such great "spectator’’ viewing – so we will see you all there again next year
So, now for the results. Apologies for the in hand, they started the lap of honour before we managed to get all the places in order. We will add 7th to 10th once we have the places.
