Special mention has to be made of the Davey John Memorial Trophy at the BHS Borders day. DJ was my own ex racehorse and we enjoyed 4 fabulous years together, enjoying the best partnership I have ever had with any horse. I lost him in a tragic field accident and had him put to sleep on 4th June 2006, a date that I dread every year since it happened. The last show he ever attended was the BHS Borders Competition Day, where he won the RoR best ex racehorse at the show rosette. Little did I know that just one week later I would be shedding tears of despair rather than of happiness as I did the day I proudly pinned his rosette to his bridle, and then got carted across the arena as he tried to run away from it!
I decided to judge his memorial class this year and, even though I knew it would be difficult, the tears welled up as I watched 9 stunning horses come into the ring. I know that DJ would be looking in, as he does every year, to see who came to celebrate his life and who was going home with his trophy. It was an impossible class to judge, but Political Sox and Katie were my winners. Not only did they put on a wonderful display, for me they just had the same kind of partnership that DJ and I had, total joy at being out together and completely in tune with each other.
Racecourse Parades
We are parading at Musselburgh Races on 22nd August, and at Hamilton Park on 19th September.
2010 Festival of the Ex Racehorse
We are delighted to announce it will be held as part of Hendersyde Horse Trials on 8th August. A schedule is available for download from our main website.
2010 Championship Show
This will be held on 26th September at the Scottish Equestrian Hotel, the site of the old Lanark Racecourse. We would like to thank David Stevenson of Ashleybank Investments for being the major sponsor of this show. A schedule is available for download from our main website.
Apologies for indulging myself by dedicating much of this month’s write up to DJ. However, he was a huge inspiration to set up a club for ex racehorse owners and ScotNorth is a huge testament to the joy he gave to me and continues to do so by being the inspiration behind the club.
