Soli isnt skinny but I really would like him to have more weight on him. He is on topspec (full rations), alfaa oil, speedi beet and calm and condition. Out in the day and in over night and gets through 2 nets of hay at night. I have gradually increased his feed to the point where he is getting what seems a big bucket full and now concerned about his feeds being too big. Was going to change the c and C to something different but what i dont know. I wondered about the topspec cool condition cubes, or the super conditioning but that is high in starch and atm he is calm and sencible and I want to keep that! I also thought I would order some micronised linseed and start that.

I know some people say that the Top Spec Super Conditioning Flakes send their horses loopy but with Jeff I have found that it doesn't. He has been on them since he came home a year and a half ago and he is still the same old Jeff, even a little lazier as he isn't super fit. I really do rate the stuff but you have to feed it in the quantities that they advise. Phone up TopSpec and ask them! They are great! What about changing the speediebeat for normal sugarbeat? I know its a pain in the backside to remember to make the day before but it contains the sugars for fat that has been taken out of speediebeat.
The other thing I use, although Jeff hates it and won't eat it! Is this stuff called Coprameal. Basically what it is is coconut extract. It comes in powder form but you just mix a little with hot water and hey presto! Instant mash! But as I said, Jeff won't eat it - won't even touch his food if its in it. It appears to be like Marmite - horses either love it or hate it!
Does Soli just get one feed a day? Or two? Try dividing them up more, Jeff gets 4 a day ... but there is no point in feeding it to him all in a oner, they can only take in so much of what they need and the rest just goes in one end and out the other.

try copra meal (now called cool stance)
its a weight gain without fizzyness i feed it to all my horses who are known to get fizzy on certain feeds and this doesnt make the mad at all!
its like sand and you soak in 3 to 4 times more of water.
i also tried my ex racer on top spec but it didnt do anything any other conditioning cubes or balancer would do. it jus costs more!! you want to be feeding a high fibre diet.
she now gets a scoop of spillers conditioning fibre(basically a chaff) a scoop of spillers conditioning cubes and a scoop of the copra twice a day, with ad lib hay in field and stable if she is in!
another thing you could try is giving soli a month off work and feeding him high strach diet to try an build his weight up and once he has sufficient weight gradually go back to the high fibre diet to stop him being fizzy to come back into work!

I've been reading about full fat soya flakes. It seems to be recommended for horses that need to put on weight

Blue chip is an old favourite amongst people at my yard. A cup in each feed seems to add a nice amount of weight. If you email Bluechip for advice and request a sample they sometimes send you a money off voucher! Using a feed balancer is normally the best way of ensuring your horse's body is utilising the feed best. Much better to feed 3 medium feeds a day than 1 big feed, the horses body can only digest so much at a time so the extra will just go straight through the gut. I add veg oil, half a cup full to add weight and coat shine. I also know of a stud services that feed straight Maize to gain weight. It is actually one of the main ingredients in most weight gain mixes.

I have to say that feeding alone doesn't just do it you need to combine good food with correct work to buid up top line and stance. iv fed coisty the super conditioning flakes for three weeks now as a wee pep up and the difference is unrea, he's ooking amazing but it is high in energy tho, I use it as a competition mix its basiclly soya beans and oats. Defo give top spec a phone.
