Me again! I like to consult with the powers that be before i do anything.... Here is my problem, i feel like i need to lunge Flash, one for something different to schooling every night, and two to help his outline and muscle tone etc. He is fine walk and trot, but the minute i push him into canter he turns into a loon and takes off, sometimes spins and goes in the other direction....sometime we even progress to a gallop As you can imagine this is not the most fun option for me as i tend to get taken with him Monty Roberts style I'm pretty new to lungeing but i can stand my ground with him, and other more experienced people have had a go with him too and he still does it. Sometimes he is like a donkey, but really it just depends what mood he's in. I'm sure some of you have had this problem with zoomy TBs on a lunge, so your help would be appreciated

Sounds just like Bob I get much better behaviour when I loose schooled him. What do you do with the lunge whip when you ask him for canter? If you want to do something different have you tried long reigning?

Try him in a pessoa! Finnie has tried bouncing in one of them but he gave up pretty fast when he realised that he was trussed up like a Christmas turkey!

I'd like to try long reining but really wouldn't know where to start, never done it before. As for the lunge whip, i tend to wait and see just how zoomy he is before i even pick it up, it's not his favourite item. I just use it very softly as if i touched him with it or gave it a good crack i think you may find me face down in the dirt with Flashy nowhere to be seen I keep going back to the pessoa, wondering if i should give it a go. Again i would really need someone to show me how to do it a few times as wouldn't feel confidant trying it out on my own. Do you find it useful Gemma?

Do you find it useful Gemma? Yep , the physio I use reckons we should all use them. They are good for building up topline, and like I say there is a limit to what they can 'do' whilst wearing them as in effect everything is fastened to something else. I wouldnt spend money on the real deal, you can get them off ebay far cheaper, Top Flyte make them I think. Just try it loose first to get him used to it. They are less complicated than they look, but if you have someone experienced in using them then that helps to start with. If anything spectacular happens make sure you have lots of pics!

Funny this should come up! I lunge Ellie quite alot...usually because my leg is aching and I don't feel like riding (sciatica). When i first started lunging Ellie...just over 2 years I have had her. She used to tank off at an alarming rate...when not walking and trotting and if I dare asked her to stop she would stop and turn in to face me. Now she has got the hang of it so much so that we can change the rein without me moving around her, and she will stand, we are now working on transitions!! ;D( and I do occasionally get a trot to walk when I ask...canter to trot is easier, walk to trot really easy and trot to canter varies!) I also find the pessoa invaluable. I start off with it loosish whilst she warms up, then I tighten it up and then move the clip to higher rings from between her legs..she was almost doing passage the other day . It really does work wonders for her topline. Today she got lunged in it. She was fairly well behaved but at one point when I was practising transitions she wouldn't come down to a walk from trot...so in the end I had a serious word in her ear...which was... you'll get 20 minutes of cantering if yer don't behave...much to my amazement it worked It is only recently too that I have started with the lunging whip. Prevoiusly she would tank off at 40mph if I so much as looked at it!! now she does that if I give it a great big flick! When Ellie was being really bad I kept her cantering round till she wanted to stop, then I made her do 2 more laps then asked her to trot. I still does this if she is feeling full of herself..hey and she's 17..you'd think she would know better! Hope this helps!
