.On the subject of calmers,i had a convo with the aromatherapist instructor at college about valerian and benzone, both are effective for about 48 hours if applied topically, however, the bit i found really helpful was.....if you put a couple of drops on a pad (the essiential oil) mixed with 20 mls of a carrier oil, like grapeseed, the effect lasts upto 5 hours, and it is far more cost effective than conventional treatments and it's effect is almost immeadiate!!!!,i think it would be handy to carry around for emergency situations, like a show, meeting a monster out hacking,or for anything where a degree of sedation is required for a short term, gonna give it a go!!!!!,what do you all think?

Sounds good missus - but I would check to see if they are 'show legal' if using for showing. I don't know if they are or not but just to be on the safe side I would check.
They sound great for stressful situations like teaching a horse to load or travel though :-)

I know oral valerian is now banned in showing but it sounds interesting.

Well as the horse doesn't ingest it as in a conventional calmer,it just sniffs a cotton pad, wheres the harm at a show???

It's not how they take it, it the fact that a banned substance has been administered :-) I am not sure why it is banned to be honest, it must be because it alters the performance over and above what a 'normal' calmer would do.

Valerian has been banned in all 'affiliated' competitions, so any classes from Riding club upwards or those run under any BD rules even if unaffiliated have banned its use, this is because it has been scientifically proven to have a calming affect which can enhance performance.
If its inhaled and has a desired effect then it will still show up in drug tests, although unlikely any horse competing under ANY rules can be drug tested at any event, so this has to be considered.
I have used Valerian and it does work- it can be really useful when a horse moves home etc or other stressful situation.
