Bobby will be 15 in January or February if you go by his real birth date. (Don't tell him though he still thinks he's 5)When do you actually start feeding veteran food?
At the moment he's on No 4 and this works for him, but, obviously as he gets older he needs different things so when do you know when to start feeding it.
Sorry if this sounds a bit thick but the only veteran I've ever had was 19 and he was on Pasture Mix nad did really well on it. There are a couple of veterans on the yard and they are on veteran feed.

Well my Bobby is 16 & still gets Spillers cool mix - probably wouldn't change it to a veteran mix until he's maybe about 20 assuming there wasn't any change in his overall wellbeing. Jad who'll be 24 in Jan 08 has been on the Spillers Senior conditioning mix for the last 4 years & looks good on it. I thnk it very much depends on the individual at the end of day - how active they are, how well they can hold their weight etc etc - horses are living so much longer now that I really don't view anything under the age of 21 as old!! Your Bobby looks very well indeed!

Gosh! I don't think I will be changing on to any veteran mix ever!!! Kalli is 17 early next year and prances around like a 2 year old in training! He is on build up and fibergy.
Certainly when I had my old mare at 27 there was no such thing as veteran mix and we are only talking of 2002 here!!! I kept her on stud cubes and yearling cubes (next best thing really) and she wouldn't eat mixes either and the stud cubes and yearling cubes had to be in different bowls!!! Arh the memories of a difficult mare!!!!
I think the veteran mix is more for the 'old plod' or the oap growing gracefully old not hyped up ex racers who think they are still racing!!!!
A broad spectrum supplement and extra oil is all what they need really if you want to add!
I would look on the back of the feed bags and see if there is actually a difference on the nutrition side! A lot of these feed companies more or less have the same feed in each but vary it for the public.
I don't think Kalli would be very pleased if his build up didn't come his way (nor Thunder either when he pinches some) I am certainly not going to change him even though he will be celebrating 17 years young in Feb-I don't think he is a veteran quite yet!!

evita (coisty and bruiser's mum) is 24 she has had foals ever year of the 15 years she has been here and all of them have been out and out jumpers!!! Evita came from germany she is double branded and won a lot of money as a showjumper b4 going on to do point to point, we bought her from doncaster sales as a brood mare as she had did her fetlocks in. she has the worst temperment ever she is sooo spooky even still and she will choose if she is to be caught or not and is very mareish but most sertainly has been the best horse on the yard due to all the quality foals she has bred. anyway she lives out with a rug on and has hay in the field with the other brood mares and just gets oats and barley once a day when the real winter starts, she has lost a bit of weight this year so its just as well she isnt in foal, not sure if this will have any more now on the other hand Corina is 20 and is as fat as a pig and doesnt even have a rug on yet and she lives out 2 so yeh i think it just bepends on the individual

He's just bezzing about round the field then when I go feed them he turns into Alpha male and tries to kill everything in sight. He's also taken quite a fancy to the 3 yr old chestnut fill ex racer that's in season aswell.
