old fashioned feeding or new fandangled???!! just thinking there is sooooooo much feeding to choose from now it can be quite confusing. i mean what did the olden day horse do when he was fed the basics? maybe its us as riders that need the special feeding to calm US down???!!!!! maybe its our faults that our horses are so jittery etc i my self am going back to feeding straight oats and barley, with suger beet, we have our own chooper coming so we can make our own chaff from quality hay! and we mix fish meal and soya throught the feed to give them extra minerals etc, all broodmares, foals, stallions. geldings, the ones on rest and the ones competing = they all get this and have done well on it all this time so why should i faf about with different feeding??!! i think i just like to spend money that my problem ha ha

I suppose feeding has changed so much due to all the additives and supplements that are now available and are mixed in with the feeds.
It's a personal choice what we feed and I would never criticise anyone for what they feed - unless it was clearly not helping the horse to maintain health and condition.
Good luck with the chaff making - too dangerous to let me anywhere near that kind of machinery !!!!!!!!!

yeh your right lisa its such a big worl of feeding out there and i guess thats cos there are so many types of horses doing so many types of activities im going back to basics cos thats what they always had b4 and when iv changed the feed if not seen the better for it althought the bluechip did seem to work well. anyway the owner pays for all the feeding ect so im really just wasting my money by buying all these extras esp if they aimt doing anything for him. i really donr need to pay for anything but im mad i like to treat them ha ha

I got told off at my yard for buying Build up as apparently I should have just had her on oats beet and chaff.
I do like to keep things fairly basic except for Lolly who requires different mixes to keep weight on. As I found one that worked last year we are sticking with it!!
I had a break from horses when it all seemed to changed so got way left behind. It was always chaff bran sugar beet and oats in varying quantities when I was young!!

I think it would be good to go back to feeding straight and then you would know exactly what your horse is getting fed.
In saying that at least pre made mixes/cubes are a bit safer and they are all tested etc. Now a days you can't even rely on folks to know what they are feeding and why never mind what quantities and that can be dangerous enough never mind letting them loose with straights! Simple things like if you feed straight bran you need to supplement with calcium etc is all but forgotten.
I would love to have been around in the "olden" days when you had proper stable lads/osters etc who knew good horsemanship inside out and knew exactly what to feed to what horse in what quantity etc. All of those old skills seem to be nearly all gone/lost.
