my old boy quants started to go lame after hard work and the vet said it was the strarting of arthritis, he was only 11 as well, so i did reserch and put him on bluechip dynamic and after a few mnths he was back winning XCs again!!!! but if i took him off it (if i was skint one mnth) he would go lame again, at that point cortaflex had just come out and was rly rly dear. it gave him a few more years of fun b4 i had to retire him and as he wasnt enjoying retirment i put him to sleep a year later boo hoo i miss him every day he was a star!! but he was lame on all 4 legs and had developed navicular, he was wasnt one that enjoyed no work, he used to stand at the gate and watch me ride away on another horse, it was so sad!!! anyway i hope i havnt put a downer on things he was 17 wen he was pts

No you haven't put a downer on things - realistically horses all age at different times according to genetics and their workload. Proph is just slightly lame So i'm trying to get ahead at the moment especially as he lives out - probably for the last year fingers crossed.
I'm sorry for your boy and your loss but I feel you made a good decision and hope I have as much sense when the time comes.
Thanks for letting me know
Michelle

My beloved Allie was slightly arthritic in both hocks, so was on Cortaflex for 5 years or so. I thought it made a huge difference, as he would need the first 10 minutes or so to loosen off & then bounced around like a 4y.o. I then put him on NAf 5 star Superflex (largely coz it was on a BOGOF offer). I rate it even more highly that Cortaflex, as Allie lost almost all signs of stiffness in his movement. I never competitively jumped him again after he started showing signs of age, but he was definitely up for it right up to the day he died - ask LisaH!

I 110% recommend Vita Flex - Flex Free (maximum strength) Dinah was diagnosed with navicular (don't believe the vet) and arthritis (as well as spavins forming on her hocks). She was lame on all 4, stepping short and couldn't step under on a circle or back up so we thought it was the end of the line.
We put her on Green Lip Muscle (natural glucosamine (sp)) and Selenium supplements (dead cheap from Healthspan website). 2 wks later and her hocks were back to normal and she was sound with 1/2 - 1 sachet of Danolin a day.
We were recommned Flex Free but it's not available in UK. It was £90 for 8oz from Ireland but I managed to find it in USA and including postage we got 16oz for £92.50. There is a 30 day "loading" period where you feed a scoop a day (7ml I think) and then it's half load. It lasts forever. Dinah has been on it for 6wks and is totally sound. Her danolin is reduced down to 1/3 of a sachet and it won't be long until she is off it all together.
She gallops, bucks and farts round the field like a right one now.
Another thing that helped is the Equilibrium Stable Chaps. She has her bed socks for all 4 feet and her lags are nice and warm in the mornings so she is never stiff.
Good luck, hope that helps with Phropet

eyes has arthritis in his front fetlocks and was lame for 1.5 yrs before it being diagnosed properl;y!!!! I did try him on cortaflex but it done nothing I then moved him onto parnamox and aloe vera and touch wood he was sound after 7 days of starting it and has remained that way ever since even after xc and jumping and I am really pleased that no one has ever mentioned him being stiff. I ran out for a week and he was noticely uncomfortable.

I never competitively jumped him again after he started showing signs of age, but he was definitely up for it right up to the day he died - ask LisaH! YEP - the day he died he carted me across a big field, head in the air, heading for a steeplechase fence with me standing up in the stirrups trying to stop him (I had tried everything else believe me) and shouting ''you old bugger - stooooooooooooop'' He certainly did not feel that he was anything less than a fully fit 4 year old having his first gallop bless him - that was such a sad day but having said that, what a way to go bless him. Back to the arthritis - Rambo has it in both hocks and I think it has spread to his rear pasterns as they look larger this year, He is pretty stiff in the mornings going out to the field. He is 24 now so I'm just going to give him Danilon to help with the swelling and the pain relief. I don't think any of the joint supplements will help him due to age and 'wear and tear'. I used to give DJ (RIP) TRM Glucoflex and it was brilliant. It really gave him a spring in his step and made a huge difference. I started giving it to him when he was 13 and started to stiffen up a wee bit - he was on it for 2 years until he went over the rainbow bridge. Michelle - I am sure that you will find the right one for Prof and he will be back to his normal self soon. LisaH xx

I use a Glucosalamine suppliment on my gang, its a cheap and cheerful one ( Equine america?) at the moment it seems to do the trick, my thoughts are start of cheap and then move on to the more expensive ones if needed,
Hope you find one that helps
