At the minute she gets a handful of alfa a and a handful of pony nuts with her stroppy mare + she was on plenty of grass and has been full of herself. Just brought her back to the farm where I live and she has gone onto a pretty bare field for a bit until the silage has been cut (saves the farmer opening too many gates if horses are out the way) so will have to feed her twice a day for time being. Will up her to scoop alfalfa and half scoop nuts with speedibeet in each feed to start with and adjust accordingly

Dennis & Flynn get the same, plus scoopful of chaff, sugarbeet & vitamin/mineral supplement at nighttime, just so they will come all the way up to the gate to let me check them over! Equine nutrition talk I went to recently said that if you've got that bit right, they should only need extra feed for specific workload or dietary imbalance. Nutritionist (who was until recently employed by TopSpec) said that most of the time, most of our expensive feed is serving no purpose but making very expensive poo! - good enough for me to stick with fibre & not much else.

I'm embarressed to say that I seem to have been overfeeding Magic over the last 2 weeks!! I was giving him a scoop of Baileys Conditioning Cubes (2.5kg worth) each day as I felt he could do with gaining a bit of weight. I seem to have successfully blown his brain and he is a bit of a looney just now! Anyway I've found this thread really interesting and informative. What size of scoop is everybody using? Mine is a round stubbs scoop that is about 8" across the diameter. It seems to hold between 2.5kg and 3kg depending upon what mix or cubes you are using. I also have smaller scoops that will only hold about 1kg each, and I'm begining to think that perhaps the big scoop should only be used for chaff!!!! Interesting what you said Lucy'smummy about feeding fibre as when I spoke to the Dodson & Horrell rep here in Scotland yesterday she basically said the same thing. I was quite horrified when she told me that the quantity of Conditioning nuts I was giving Magic contained enough energy that I could event him off them!!!!!!! I was also a bit upset when I compared the Conditioning Cubes to other feeds of Bailey's and they had the same energy/protein/oil and fibre as Racehorse Cubes!

I feed mine safe and sound chaff , high fibre nuts and top spec antilam. She gets global herbs hoof stuff just now but when its finished thats it. Shes out full time and shes pretty round! I think it's pretty easy to blow their brains jayne, it seems to be trial and error. Its also so hard when there's so many products on the market. Mine do best on fibre. no mollases, cereals or alfalfa. Its not easy to find these days.
