treated myself to a new pair of magnetic boots for Max. He's knocked himself goofing in the field and its looking very similar to a splint but came overnight and very hard. No swelling or lameness but it looks a little unsightly. Having used some arnica orally and topically plus ultrasound since yesterday it does look smaller. Ah well thats horses for you. I was wondering if anyone come across DMSO in a shelf product or have you always got it from the vet. Second question has anyone used anything else to speed up the recalcification and fibrous tissue dispersal. I don't need to give him anything for inflamation (bute) as it has none and bute does impair healing. Also I don't want to allow him to have no pain as he will just goof more either in the stable or turned out. He has the magnaboots on during the day, leg ice and bandages the rest of the day, with 2 sessions of ultrasound. Sara

Hi I used to sell the DMSO to the vets, you can only get it from vets as it was withdrawn from the market a couple of years ago as there was some fears over its use. For horses you need a high percentage 90%, so get your vet to give you DMSO 90 and I always ask for a strong steroid to be put in it, dexamethazone or such like. Make sure you wear gloves as DMSO is a strong carrier and you could easily absorb through the skin!! Good luck!

Thanks All for the information - please could you tell me who supplied the homeopathic remedy. I had read about the DMSO worries and thought as much. Max had hours of fun last night and has shredded the bandage on the offending leg - got out of his fly rug and mask. arggghhhhhh! However the other fore bandage was left alone - sometimes like having another 4yr old boy who also gets his bandages off in the night

Yep got the arnica tablets and gel. So you are just giving the dose on the bottle ? I am also using witchazel to bring out the bruising (if any).

you can buy arnica and witchhazel gel in tack shops, its great as long as you dont use it on open wounds. Arnica tablets you can get in supermarkets. It tells you how much to give on the bottle. I usually just pop it in a bit apple. try not to touch the tablet though as it decreases potency. I use arnica on me a lot and the difference in bruises is amazing
