Lolly has bags of scope when jumping but tends to get so wound up that I can't take her to shows. She will also stop dead and spin at new fillers. I am at a loss as I do want to compete as when she is good she is very good. I think that I now anticipate it which is not helping? So should I try lessons (there is noone at our yard that I think I would use)...some kind of mental training (for me) ...get somoeone else to do it (who???)...or just give up. She did get better for a while but as she is fresher at the moment she is just more spooky in general. It is so frustrating. I would like to give it a go this winter as I am thinking of breeding from her next year (you wuld think I would have learnt my lesson on this one )

I would get a lesson, things seem so much easier in a lesson & someone is able to tell you what is going wrong. You can't help but anticipate a stop, as you don't want to fall off! it's a vicious circle but I would get help. Good Luck!!! How old is she?

lots of practise and lessons with someone who knows what they are talking about - like a showjumper. she is needing confidence - but you could be doing things like dropping your hands at the fence, and dropping a contact is a perfect excuse to refuse, also she will be like oh if your not confident about it then neither am i i defo dont think you should give up esp if you are going to turn her away in spring as it wont do either of yous any good, and also i dont think you should get someone else to jump her as this doesnt change how YOU ride her and plus uses have a better bond than a stranger would. i think you should get a block of lessons, start off small and work your way up, and practise practise find lots of spooky things to school her around etc also if you take her to shows start off at nursery novice so she can trot or climb round the course if she has to if you start too big it doesnt let her get a chance to build her confidence up good luck

Always a hard one Merl - but like th others I think some lessons for you both would be a huge help.
My best lad DJ (rip) used to get like that, we both got lessons from a great instructor (Duncan Owen) and he helped us to resolve all these issues - and we never looked back.
A 'good' instructor is very important though so you may have to pay a wee bit more - but the rewards will be worth it.
Duncan is in Edinburgh but you could bring Lolly to him or he may come out to you depending on where you are. I am going to arrange a jumping clinic for the club, with him as the instructor and was aiming at March/April. I could get him to come earlier if you could get Lolly to our yard as I would like to get Brian started as well, so he could give us both consecutive lessons.
What do you think?

I am going to arrange a jumping clinic for the club, with him as the instructor and was aiming at March/April. I will be allowed to ride by then, so why not get him to come to mine? Possible population would be 4-5 : Merl, Jill, Gemma, one of my mates & me!

I would be up for that. I just get annoyed as I know I have done it before and I know that she can do it.......but we can't if that makes sense.

LisaH xx Already discussed ages ago & have agreement in principle. Will tie down date when I am fit to personally participate in lesson - it would hurt too much to watch everyone else having fun while I sit on the sidelines.
