I didn't really know what to put for the title!!
Any how, here goes!
As you all saw on Sunday she can be very nice and calm BUT
When she is in season she can be a real pain!
Now she started on Monday...went off her evening feed (so she is getting nowt but grass now!!)
I lunged her yesterday as she seemed on her toes and she had a right good buck and a fart on the end of the lunge when cantering..I thought I had worn her out!!
I brought her in this morning and she was whinnying at everyone! I tied her up in the yard ..furthest away from the stallion...she stood there looking at him with THOSE eyes and peeing (like mares do!!) I then rode..she was a little on edge and she bucked when I cantered but then she settled down and was just chomping on the bit a bit more than usual.
Now I brought her back in and put her in the stable, but her field buddy was in next door and when she went out (the field buddy) she was just such a pain..whinnying and tramping round & pawing.
Now do I just put up with it or do I put her on a calmer to chill her out a bit and take the edge off her!!
I put her on wendals calmer at the beginning of winter as she was whinnying and generaly being a tart when she was in season and it seemed to work.
I am tempted to lunge her again tonight to see if I can get rid of some of that energy and to see if that works!
Any suggestions welcome...even if its just to say leave her as she is!
Ta muchly Mell

Hya,
Maybe a calmer would be a good idea to take the edge of her, i used steady up (years ago) with good effect but the magnesium based ones (like Magic) have had good reviews too.
The other thing is that the fields have been recently fertilised andthe grass is shooting through, lush and green and full of sugar. Chief was like that last night, wouldn't eat his tea and pawing at the door to go back out.
If there is something that can settle her seasons (i wouldn't know never having a mare) i'd perhaps deal with that first and hopefully once they get used to this lush grass in their systems they should settle down a bit.
Give me a shout if you need a hand, xxx

I think Nick has similar problems with Maggie and has her on regumate. It's expensive though and I'm not sure if she is on the horse one or the one for cows/pig?? I'm sure she'll tell you though.

I have decided to try her back on the wendals calmer and see if that works. If I start it now then it will have time to get in her system for her next 'season'!!
Poor hubby has to put up with 2 hormonal women in his life!!
Funnily both the calmer for Ellie and the stuff I take both contain valerian in various forms!!

LOL - that's why I don't have mares LOL Me too! Atomic always brought everything into season too which was a bit of a pest! (for my friends! ) My friend has real bother with her mare and has her on Moody Mare - a Wendals one, I think, that really helps x

I have always had mares and they never seemed any bother at all, never knew when they where in season, they never rode any different..then I got Ellie and she is fine most of the time she just turns into a tart when she's in season and whinneys rather loudy at everyone and then gets on her toes!!

what about naf Oestress, that's what i have Brooke on and it seems to work. Maybe it is more that sort of thing she needs rather than a calmer.

Isn't it typical!!
She isn't so bad now!! Yes she is 'squirting' and calling but she didn't call tonight when I went down and she was quite calm like normal (is there a normal!! LOL) when I rode tonight..even popped her over her first jump...it was only about a foot high!!

Maggie used to be quite awkward when in season especially when you were schooling her. I put her on Regumate, the pig version as its cheaper than the horse one and does the same job! She never has seasons now its great and there is no more moodiness in the school!!
