My sister said that Felix was looking a bit ribby! I thought he was ok I think he's going through a growing spurt - he's rather croup high at the moment! He's just on a wee drop of feed - two handfuls of oats, one handful of soaked speedibeet, seaweed, vits and mins and cod liver oil. He's out all day and has a big lump of hay at night. Should I just up his feed a wee bit or maybe change to something else? I know he's just a baby but I want to give him the best chance. He's Appaloosa x Knabstrupper. To make about 15.3 hh. His bum's 14.3hh at the moment and his withers about 14.1hh. He's 20 months old.

i find all the youngsters look scrawney and ribby when they are yearling/ 2 year olds yeh i thin it is them growing, you need to be care fullt not to feed them too much or they can grow too quickly and go off there legs so id manybe give him more hay and maybe up the feed he has already a tiny bit. if hes happy and healthy looking i wouldnt worry too much hel put it all on in the spring grass

Thanks Bingbong - that's what i was thinking. The grass is still rubbish just now so I've given him an extra wee bit of each and some more hay. First show is in May and he'll be lovely and big again then.
Funny how the youngsters get so awkward looking eh?! xx

He's just on a wee drop of feed - two handfuls of oats, one handful of soaked speedibeet, seaweed, vits and mins and cod liver oil. He's out all day and has a big lump of hay at night. I agree that a lot of foals rising yearling can look a bit ribby and scrawny, but a rising 2 year old should look a wee bit better (3 of mine of htat age are looking OK, one a bit scrawny though, as was her full brother at the same age). I do feel though that the amount you are feeding seems slightly meagre for a growing youngster. If you are planning to show (with some success) then you will need to up that a bit and have him looking a bit rounder. If he is just for a store adn won't go out in public or only for the odd outing for education later in the summer, then providing he has enough nourishment to develop then he does not need to be so well covered. Can you get a pic of him to post for us to see?

Light's against me but I'll see what I can do. He's got a great ass! Will get on it x
P.S. I'll just be taking him to the Appaloosa classes to get him out and about! Don't think he'll win anything cos he's not pure bred and has no spots.....

I fed my boy Dodson and Horrel suregrow. Good stuff and is a balancer formulated for foals and youngstock.

Right! The wee bugger wouldn't stand still and the light wasn't good, and there wasn't enough room in the stable to get all of him(!) but this gives you an idea of his outline! Will take some more tonight! I think the "ribby-ness" was just an off day. You can see them when he moves, like you're supposed to, but they're not sticking out. I think he does need a bit more coverage. Any ideas on food to make him grow taller - I don't want to sell him but his parents were both 15.3hh and I'd like him to be over 16hh!

he looks ok lasts the luster and body that a show type needs but if your not showing proper then, does it matter? my 2 year olds live out with hay and thats it the now, they wont be going anywhere or doing anything till they are 4 yr old though i have one 2 yr old that is in and gets hard feeding and doesnt look all that much better than the one that outside so it really depends on the individual really tbh

He's no show pony but is a lovely chap and a great mover! I've bought the Suregrow MissTickle suggested and will increase his feeding a bit. The spring grass will help too!
