It maybe that I am a showing person through and through but to me a show class should be just that - for Show horses. TB's come in all shapes and sizes and are re-trained for many different things and as such have different muscle builds and ways of going. How can you judge a striped fit eventer against a backend heavy show jumper, a powerpack dressage horse, a covered weight carrying show horse and a happy hacker? What I meant and was trying to be diplimatic is that we don't want judges favouring the ''FAT'' horses which seems to happen all too often in ''normal showing''. Athletes do come in all shapes and sizes and, as ever, it would be down to the judge on the day but we do not want judges who simply put the fattest ones at the top Yes you should be able to see merits of each horse for its job but when judging a show class you have to measure them against a standard as a show horse. Not under our criteria which is one of the prime reasons for setting up the club. Our judging criteria are on the website for everyone to see and it is then up to them whether they want to be judged against them I know you got a lot of entries at Hopetoun and you will do again but there will also be alot of people that maybe didn't do as well as they thought they should do there and won't enter this year. That is the case with EVERY kind of show, there are always people who feel they should have been placed higher - that comes with showing. Even with the straightest of judges they would still feel a slight pull towards horses they have had dealings with. If someone brought Brian or Denzel along to a class you were judging could you honestly not be slightly biased towards them for any reason? Denzel or bri would never be in a class I was judging as they are my boys When I judge, I use the judging sheet and keep the scores so if there is any dispute (there never has been to date) I can show people the marks I gave. I know when I have taken part in ScotNorth showing classes and the judge knows me well, I have been marked down purely because of this to avoid any kind of accusations of favouritism - I accept that and am fine with it as I go for the fun of it not to win red rosettes No matter what happens people will always say that others only got their placing - good, bad or indifferent - due to connections with judges. It's a no win situation. That happens regardless of who the judge is - every single showing class you watch, there is always someone afterwards bemoaning that they did not win or moaning about where they came, Showing is a subjective sport at the end of the day and people just have to accept that when they take part.Would you not also think that people may want different peoples opinions of their horses? Having the same judges for the same things gets a bit monotinous and you can usually predict who is going to do well as they are the right type for that particular judge. Yes all of the horses have to perform well to be in with a shout but there will always be one or two that the judges will love from the moment they see them and will try to bump them up a bit no matter what happens in the rest of the class. In general I agree with you which is why we have a host of new judges for the annual show this year and we have had new judges for our classes thus far.
I would not call asking Lucinda and Scu to judge for only the second time ever using the same judges or being monotonous. They are, after all, patrons of the club and I think it is good to ask them to judge maybe once a year, at the Festival. Yes, last year we did use only a few judges lots of times but that was due to lack of availability of other judges rather than just wanting to use one or 2 people - it was either that or cancel the classes so we did not really have much choiceI hope my responses in red above explain where I am coming from Els. Fundamentally we are a ''Grass Roots' club and our prime objctive is to get people out and about with their horses and enjoying it. Yes, the festival has become a prestigious and flagship event for us but surely that in itself justifies asking ''Trainers'' to judge this event each year. We are not, and do not aspire to be, at the same level as HOYS etc, we are grass roots. Hopefully if people start off with our classes and events they are inspired to attend HOYS qualifiers etc - our role is to cater for the grass roots riders and ensure that what we do encourages people to go for it but we are a bit different when it comes to judging criteria etc - that's intentional. If we applied the same standards as for a 'standard' show horse then roughly 50% of horses regsitered with us would immediately lose out because their horses are blemished. Is that fair ? Anyway - I still take on board what you are saying and we are looking at other options for judges. I suspect that given the choice our members would opt for Lucinda and Scu over anyone else and no one would bemoan it was unfair if horses previously connected to them were in the classes. LisaH

Do you know where the ring will be? Where the dressage arenas are - we are using that area once the dressage has finished in the afternoon L x
