This is a very sad thread, one that I never thought I would have to write.
Unfortunately Peter Monteith tragically died on Sunday night, devastating everyone who knew him. Not only was he a top class trainer but he was a totally decent guy who loved his horses.
Training and life carries with it many strains and stresses and it is so sad that things seem to have got too much for Peter. May he rest in peace.

Very sad news and a loss to racing. So many ScotNorth horses came from Peter Monteith. Such a talented trainer and knew when it was time for a horse to become an ex racehorse Rest in Peace Mr Monteith
My thoughts to his family, friends and staff and especially my friend Lisa H xxx

I can recall the first time I met Peter. Must have been back in about 1998 or so in the Black Bull in Dalkeith. I was the geeky english brother of the hot leggy blonde lass he was seeing at the time. My sis Lisa.
We struck up conversation and after a few pints of heavy had hit my belly, he regailed some past adventure, about falling off a hoss I think. I can't recall too much, but I do remember he kept saying 'd'ya ken' after every other sentence. Anyhow, me being thick, I had to correct him and tell him "No Peter, my name is Ben"...
Every time I met him thereafter he refused to allow me to buy him a drink. Not sure if it was punishment or otherwise...at least he'd accept my ciggarettes.
A man who was easy with his advice, a generous and friendly host, a dab hand on the pool table. Something so true when people say 'the brightest flame burns quickest'.
Be good.
