I have been told that feeding corn or rape oil to feed can help with weight gain. I was wondering if anyone had used these and seen a difference? I have been told that corn/rape/sunflower oils are the best types as they are pure, the veg oil you buy in supermarkets are blends. Also any idea where I can buy these in bulk? I give enough money to Tesco each month as it is!

I've been using soya oil and notice a difference on my boy who was very poor when I bought him in December. I get it from www.whitehorsenutrition.co.uk even with the postage it is the cheapest I have seen . Its about £6.99 plus postage for 5litres coming in at just about £10.00 Saw some recently in tack shop and it was nearly £13.00

Baileys No 1, high fibre cubes, and Alpha A....though once I have finished the Baileys I am going to swap to A & P weight gain... Baileys worked on my old pony back in the day, but its not really doing anything this time around!

The problem is that some horses dont like oil, so it may be worth trying supermarket stuff before you buy in bulk. I can't remember how much it is off the top of my head, but if you go down feeding oil route, once you get to a certain amount, you need to supplement with vit e and selenium. Equimins do soya oil 1 ltre is £3.45 2.5 ltrs £7.40 and 5 litres £10.15

I am sooo thick.....! I got myself very confused in Tesco, as they had big bottles of 'veg' oil, and also sunflower oil....but no rapeseed oil........ till I read the label and saw that the veg oil actually WAS rapeseed oil.....DOH....
Will let you know how I get on, mine are both so greedy that I doubt there will be an issue getting them to eat it!

I give my mare the Tesco's veg oil - not sure if it helped condition wise as she was also on a conditioning feed but her coat looks fabulous on it.

hi we did feed all the racehorses on veg oil until we changed to a high oil diet any way(better for ulcers etc) and believe it or not tescos is cheapest. (or used to be) the big retailers like stockfarm were far more expensive. Curragh carron oil is very good to. we have one horse that lives on it and is a very bad eater. (quite expensive thou). you can buy a high oil alfa-a as well.
it used to be quite funny when tesco home delivery brought 20 3litre veg oil up. one of the drivers asked me if i was running the car on it!!

I heard that Corn oil was great too. I think I just gave Sunflower oil to my lot out of Lidl which I think helped.
