There are pictures of the epitomy of gloss in the picture gallery, however I am not too happy with his condition..... I know he has been out of work for quite some time, but his coat is showing the tell tale signs of not having faired too well over the winter..... as he is rather reluctant to part with his winter woolies and todays hack proved that we are far too woolly!!! So any tips? Am currently feeding 1 scoop (round scoop) of D&H build up cubes, 1 scoop of horse and pony mix and 1 scoop of Dengie Alfa A..... and garlic granules and carrots........
I've seen throughout the forum that Lisa advocates BArley??? What do you guys think about adding this to the above feed and how much.
He is having this feed twice a day!

Is that split into two feeds or twice a day? When I spoke to dodson and horrel they said I was feeding too much by volume (two stubbs scoops high fibre cubes) and it was basically just going straight through the stomach. So to split it into smaller feeds. Although you are meant to be able to use them as a forage replacer. Also why feed build up cubes and mix? Both are 'complete' feeds. By combining you can unbalance them.
I fed bruised barley this winter to get weight on Tickle. I don't normally feed cereals, but she was having reactions to just about everything else. It may be worth phoning a feed company and see what they say. I use top spec balancer. It works well for us. When I needed to add extra calories I added oil. Probably the best thing for him is grass (unless he's laminitic) and thankfully after the long winter, its arrived. He really is a stunning lad. His coat is very shiny. I think some just look a bit rough at this time of year when they are changing coats

Hey Measels
I would cut out the horse and thingyy mix and give him Baileys No1 Cereal meal too. High content of oil is good for the coat.
Like Miss T says best thing for him will be grass - put a rugy on him jsut to keep the chill off him and encourage the coat to come out.
Piggy is getting Barony Equine supplies own brand conditioning cubes - same as the D&H build up cubes- Alfafa Oil - sugar beet and jsut started on the No1 cereal meal till we're at grass 24/7

iv PMed you also a horse cant digest 2 kg or hard feed at any one time and normally a scoop=1 kg any undigested food just straight through them -also undigested food in the gut can lead to ulcers and excitable behaviour iv never had a problem with barley all the SJ ersi rode were fed on oats and barley chaff and sugarbeet ( cheap food) and i used to alwasy feed my old horse it iv not used it on Argent though as hes quite excitable so not tried it on him but think i might this winter but as i said in my PM i highly rate Topspec

I am STILL fighting with Chief's coat to come out after 7 weeks back after his hols.
The neck looks fine, but passed the shoulders and it's seriously thick and refusing to come out yet,
Re Feed, i feed simple system and swear by it - it's fabulous. But i do have a horse that is really sensitive to ANY feed containing mollasses, cereal, barley etc etc....

Ru is currently a little on the lean side, so I have changed her feed so that she is now on hifi, baileys no 6 (endurance mix) and sugar beet.
According to the lady at baileys this is nice and balanced as I am feeding the correct amount and should help with the energy issues we have, she is also now on 3 meals a day.
