HELP!

Todd has been a bit on the lean side this winter time with there being absolulty no grass at our place with all the wet weather the paddocks have really suffered. The horses have been on half day turnout with Todd going out at lunch time.I think this has been stressing him a bit too.
Anyway about a 10 weeks ago I put him on Blue Chip and he has been gaining weight, but since I've had him back in work he's dropped what he had put on.His spine is slightly showing and has lost covering aroung around hips and flank area.
I've now put him on 3 feeds a day 7am,4pm and 9pm with as much hay as he wants and I've also given him a large tub full of Doddson & Horrell Just grass in case he fancies that(he's such a fuss pot).
7am Feed 1 Scoop of nuts(only cause he will waste most of it as he just wants out in the morning)
4pm Feed Level scoop of Alfa oil 2 mugs of blue chip 1/2 scoop nuts 110mls Oil Speedi beet the conditioning one--- 1/2 scoop
9pm Feed,Same as 4pm
When he's turned out he's given hay as well.
Do you think this is all right in what I'm doing or can you sugest anything else that might help.
Also he's up to date with worming, teeth etc

Give Fibrebeet a try hun, it's highly digestable fibre, oil is 3% and protein is 10% I think! It's a bit like speedibeet but with more fibre, I put MF on it last year, gave him a break off it and he dropped weight! so he's back on it, and staying on it HTH xx

LOL
I have MF on it, it's put loads of condition and weight on him.
You could try Equivite body builder? a mare at work is on it, from what I could tell it's milk pellets

Mmmmm!I don't really want to add any more bulk to his feed as I don't want overload him thats why i have upped his oil intake to 110mls a feed.Plus he's getting 2 mugs of blue chip more for a horse of his height as it is. I'm really starting to worry that its something underlying. I'm probley stressing for the nothing. He's always been a poor doer.I've had him at the same yard for the last 7 years and the paddocks have never been bald like this before and he's always been allowed to go out all day.I think the extra time he's having to spend in in his stable has been stressing him out which of course doesn't help with the weight issue

Hi honey
try bruised barley. Brian and denzel are up at the yard and they have literally ''ploughed'' their paddocks - but they are carrying loads of condition. I have them on haylage (they get 3 big nets each in stable and 4 nets outside during turnout which is 8am to 6.30pm) and their hard feed is just bruised barley and chaff and they are doing GREAT on it.
They get 2 large scoops of barley per day (b'fast and tea) and huge dollop of applechaff in each feed. I was amazed at how well they are holding condition, in fact Denzel is looking a wee bit porky!
So, to my point, maybe add a couple of scoops of bruised barley to his feeds ?? I know MissTickle started feeding it to Tickle and saw a difference in about a week. It is cheap as chips to buy and they all seem to love it!!!

the blue chip pro might be a better idea for him ...... or save almost a tenner and put him on topspec comprehensive its £35 a a bag compared to the pro that is £45 i think you can up his nuts in the 4pm and 9 pm feed to one scoop and swap them for a condidtioning food a horse can have 2.5 scoops of feed per go ;D argy was loosing weight before winter and i was feeding him 4 scoops of conditioning cubes a day as well as 3 scoops of alfalfa oil and speedi beet but now i have him on topspec i have reduced his feed to only one scoop a day of top spec cool and condidtion and 2 scoops of hifi he is out in the stubble and doesnt have grass either but they do get hay i would really recomend top spec its saving me money and AJ looks crackin the phone line is fab too they even sent me money off coupons they have lots of leaflets on exrace horses too its worth a phone call anyway

:-/Lisa and BB, when first got Todd I put him on microinized barley and he did put condition on. I'll see how he goes with the extra feed and oil for a couple weeks and if that fails try the barley or like BB says try the blue chip pro or the topspec. Failing that I'm going to get the vet out to do some blood tests just to make sure there's nothing underlying(crickey listen to me I'm starting to panic) It probley just lack of grass and turn out time. Thanks girlies

lisa?? how are you finding brian to ride on the barley does it blow head at all ?? Hi honey - I have not sat on Brian since last August so can't answer that one, and who could tell the difference even if it had 'blown his brains' Bless him - he is great to handle on the ground and very super chilled so i don't think it has done much to him. Denzel is livelier since he has been on the barley, but not badly so. He just seems in high spirits, but he behaved great at the 2 clinics so, again, I don't think it has caused any problems. Valerie - I had not said about balancers as you are already on the blue Chip one, but it seems wrong that you have to feed so much of everything else if he is on a balancer. The first winter I had brian I could not get the weight on, I was talked into buying a bag of Top Spec balancer and their cool conditioning cubes and the difference was just amazing within about a week. Maybe when you are due a new bag of Blue Chip, give Top Spec a try instead.......both Bri and Denzel will be going onto that when they are in more demanding work. Anyway - I hope the bruised barley does the trick as it is by far the cheaper option LisaH xxxxxxx

HELP!

I was close to getting Tickle blood tested at new year, I was sure she had something metabolic going on and was very thin. Anyway it turned out she was having a reaction to a feed supplement I was giving her. Weird I know! She is also alfalfa intolerent so cant have anything including supplements that contain it. I put her back on Top Spec balancer (that'll teach me to try saving cash and switching products!) and Lisa gave me a bag of bruised barley. So she gets high fibre nuts, balancer, soya oil, barley and sugar beet and she is slowly putting weight back on. I didn't really want to feed her cereals, but she seems to react to so many things, feeding her is a minefield. Nealry springtime, the grass will help woo hoo
