Since owning an exracer,I've become a hoof nerd. I even sniff hoof picks. Tickle is barefoot and I feed her Top Spec Anti lam and calmag. She's had white line disease and abscessing. Her feet are also flat and there's more flare than a 70s glam rock band.My farrier is very good and has made a massive difference in her feet although he thinks I'm neurotic, he could be right. I tried farriers formula but she came out in bumps and abscessed. She cant seem to tolerate alfalfa and FF is alfalfa based. She wont eat biotin and she stopped eating Topspec hoof powder. Now she gets the antilam and is happy to eat that. So I seem to have found something that works for her. I'd like to keep her barefoot if possible.

I use Keratex on Jads feet once a week & it's certainly made a huge difference to the strength of the hoof or so my farrier says!! Seriously his feet look 100 times better now than when I got him.

If barefoot, I would suggest MagOx rather than CalMag, and also not to put any preparation on the horse's hoof at all (if possible). Keratex is great for shod feet!

She wont eat MagOx for some reason, she really is fickle. Perhaps I should change her name!

I found Mal wouldn't eat it if he had a small feed, but in his HUGE winter feeds he can't even tell it is there. You can add apple juice to make it taste nicer. CalMag can be quite irritant on the tummy, but if yours is fine, then there shouldn't be a problem. Mal with his ulcers was impossible!

I've got the contact details for metabolic horse so when shes finished the calmag ,I'll try her again on MagOx. She really is fussy, but touch wood the calmag doesn't seem to irratate her stomach.

LOL Typical Miss Tickle I use Farriers Formula for the TBs and the QH and also with Topspec leisure for the Welshie and Topspec balancer for the Pensioner. I also feed straight Alfalfa. thankfully none have a alfalfa intolerance and their feet are in pretty good nick and not all need shoes.

My oh is a farrier and he gave me some Kevin Bacon Supplement to try in his feed, some Keratex to put on after shoeing, and Kevin Bacon ointment for everyday use. Codys feet have improved quite a lot in the 3 months I have been using it all..he went through a phase of losing a shoe every week and his feet were like pin cushions, now they are a lot stronger and his feet are growing nicely. There's no way in this world he could ever go barefoot though.

Kevin Bacon ointment for everyday use. quote] I love the smell of that Kevin Bacon stuff - mind you the real 'kevin bacon' was pretty darn tasty in the '80s - remember him in footloose ?? Sorry - totally off topic

Wow Kyle - in my 'ignorance' I assumed that all the hardy native breeds just had really good feet (except the laminitis issue of course) - I have learned something !
