I have had my boy since he was 4 he is now 21 he came straight off the racecourse and is a stallion. On wed he wasn't himself so I called the vet who said he had laminitis in all 4 feet. The vet cannot believe it. He is not the type and not overweight either. my management of him didn't point it it. The vet was back today and took blood as he thinks it is metabolic could be the start of cushings or even type 2 diabetes. Has anyone else had any experience of this

Here are some links that may help. It's a horrible thing lamintis. Touch wood none of mine have ever had it, although I think Tickle has lgl and I manage her accordingly. There's a lady called jackie a taylor and she runs The metabolic horse group Shes well worth speaking to and knows her stuff esp re diet and management of laminitis, cushings and other metabolic problems. www.laminitis.org/pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/TheMetabolicHorse/www.metabolichorse.co.uk/

poor lad, laminitis is a horrid thing. Wee Minty (sec a) had it last year. He pretty much is the type but he certainly wasn't fat. The grass last year was a nightmare tho and was a bumper time for laminitis. There was all sorts of horses getting it. I know it can be caused by lots of different things. He thought Mints might have cushings but he doesn't, thankfully. Could it be Equine metabolic syndrome? it is similar to Cushing’s disease and is a major cause of laminitis. i think trilostane has helped horses in the past. I know that early detection is crucial and obviously you have done this. I think it is also managed with a low carb diet, formula for feet is also good. I am sure he will be feeling much better on his nice big thick bed now. I hope he gets better soon.

Hi Lindaw
Sorry to hear that diagnosis .
Kyle's advice sounds spot on to me and from that at least you know that you can manage this and still keep your lad happy,

Hi Lindaw im so sorry to hear this.
I have heard of this.... a lady who OH has known since he was a child had a lovely older TB who unfortunately got cushings and then laminitis. She took the decision to have him PTS, but this was her choice and not a necessity.
I really hope your boy is doing better today and he will make a recovery

Thanks everyone got results of blood test today blood sugar very high so at least it will be manageable with tablets. He is getting very ratty being shut in but at least he is in a cattle court and not a small stable. A vast improvement on him from last week. He has to take the tablets for 6 weeks then he has another blood test to see if we have the dosage correct. I feel very relieved was getting worried. Have had a few strange problems with him but this could explain everything.

He is getting X rays on Thursday as he was slightly worse laminitis wise yesterday. He is very happy staying in the cattle court not even looking to go out in the field I had not realized how much his temperament had changed over the last couple of years until his metformin tablets got into his system. (have found a garlic crusher handy for breaking down the tablets ) Knew he was slightly more bad tempered but put it down to old age but now realize it wasn't. It had changed gradually and I had never noticed just thought he was annoyed at not getting to go to shows anymore. Will keep you posted re x rays

Today Percys laminitis took a turn for the worse leaving no option for him. He had been doing so well. He was xrayed 2 weeks ago and they looked good ,todays ones had all 4 pedal bones dropped I know that I had no option but it is so difficult when you have them for so long. He came to me straight from the track as a 4yr old he would have been 22 next year. I have many happy memories of him at Fife Riding club doing hunter trials and show jumping. There is a photo of him on the home page jumping at Gleneagles It is on the home page, he is halfway over the jump. Taken jumping at Glenagles Not clever enough to put photos on the web.
