How long should it take to get a horse fit, and what sort of program would you workto. as a guide, i know all horses are different!!!

depends on how long they have been on off for and the age of the horse and what it is your planning to do? generally lots of long slow hacking at first building up on the trot and hill work and then start to include short spurts of canter and schooling and circling say if they just came off the grass and you want to go to a show, id say 6 weeks but every horses is different some might not need that long

I dont want him too fit, a healthy fit for over winter and for him, plan on jumping him next year.

Hi PM
I would just keep hacking him over the winter - if yo can get in say 3 good hacks per week that should be enough to keep him ticking over and then you can build on the schooling in the spring when you start jumping him.
