Hi Jayne
What a dliemma for you. I can't suggest farriers but I can highly recommend the mac boots. Denise used them on her ex racehorse for a year as his feet were so awful and they were fantastic - I even hunted him in them and you would never have known he had boots on. One boot did get sucked off but as we were galloping up a hill and hit a really deep muddy bit at high speed I was not too put off them!!
Magic can also wear his boots in ScotNorth classes and he will not get marked down for doing so :-)
I am getting Brian's shoes removed on Monday - more because he is having a total break until the spring but I am going to give him a try shoeless when he comes back into work and get the boots for the rougher ground if needed.
I think we go past your place when we are going racing to Carlisle, we go over the 'Devil's Beef Tub' and you are on the way. Do you have a big school and the house is down a single lane track on the left (coming from Edinburgh) and you have a saddlery place too?
MissTickle has had great success with the Mac boots and although they are a big outlay they soon pay for themselves !

At this stage I am wishing I'd never had Magic shod! He was unshod when I bought him, but I felt that since I was going to be doing a reasonable amount of road work and rough terrain with him that it was going to be better for him to be shod. Having had problems in the past with my farrier I was a bit unsure if it was the right thing, but he assured me that it would be fine etc etc!!! Famous last words eh?
I've left him yet another message, but I won't hold my breath for him getting back to me any time soon! I think a pair of boots will be the best option. Would I need them all round do you think or just on the front?
You do indeed pass my place if you are going down the Tub to Carlisle, but the place you are talking about is my friend Viv's place. I am about 3 miles before hers. I do have an arena but my stables and arena are at the top of one of my fields. I have just the 2 horses, where Viv has about 10!! I am also on the left hand side though.

Aha - I will need to pop over for a visit some time :-)
Denise used boots all round but he may manage with just fronts. Why not try just fronts and see how he gets on? I know quite a few ex racehorses in just front shoes and they don't seem to have any problems behind.
Ebay normally have a selection BUT go and look at the boots in a saddlers so you know how to measure them to get the right size first - the measurements are all different depending on which make of boot you buy.

Will do, thanks for the advice.
You are welcome to call in anytime for a coffee when you are passing! It's always nice to meet like minded people. In fact anyone passing let me know and you are welcome to come in and say hello!

Good idea!
After sending yet another message to my farrier, he did actually respond...............but unfortunately he didn't give a timescale as to when he might come and put Magic's shoe back on!! All he did say was that it wouldn't be this week!
I have managed to find another farrier who is happy to come and put a shoe on on Friday and be a regular vistor thereafter..............phew!!! I was at the stage of starting to write a large advert........you know the kind of thing..........FOR SALE, everything as owner giving up! 2 horses, and all associated bits, saddles, stables, lorry, 4 x 4 etc! It would have destroyed me to sell everything but I was prepared to do so given that I won't have my animals suffer any form of neglect and I just felt that I wasn't giving them the proper care, when one of the professionals that I relied on is useless!
Anyway rant over with, think I'm heading for a large glass of wine and an even larger block of chocolate!! I work at a well known Health Spa and we all believe that chocolate is the answer for everything!

if you go to www.saddleryshop.co.uk. I think thats the address, they have all different boots in stock and know all about fitting. Different boots fit different hoof shapes. They're really helpful. You need to measure boots righr after a trim to get best fit. However fingers crossed farrier is reliable.
